Picture of Hanano
Hello All,Just looking at pictures for our holiday card, and found this one. Hanano is doing this more and more when she does not get her way. It is so cute it is hard to punish her, instead of just breaking out in laughter. But of course, we do punish her! Joe and Miyabi say she is spitting at her, although I believe this is usually dry.
We are all doing well, and now we just have a little cold passing around the family. This is normal, as all of you with kids know.
Hope you are all well, and not too stressed out by the upcoming holidays. After all, it is a time to enjoy loved ones and reflect on those things that are important to us.
Enjoy,
Steve and family

More links to pics, and eating some cake
What do you think? This is the right side profile. There is his face, with the left hand in the background. We think it is pretty cool. Before, when I have seen these, I was like... "thats the head... foot... hand... really? I can't really see it." But now, with this, I can see what they are talking about! Too Cool!
Here are the pics from the lake we went to, as well as some taken at home... http://picasaweb.google.com/stephenkenyon/AtTheLakeNov_08#
Here are some pics from a BBQ we had one night last week at the beach, when Shiho's sister came up for a quick visit.... http://picasaweb.google.com/stephenkenyon/BeachBBQOct08?authkey=NWGwmuktODQ#
Oh yeah, I made my first cake last night. It is a all home made 3 layer yellow cake, with some frosting that was purchased. I am going to make another cake for a friend this weekend, since she is having some surgury. That will be a peanut butter 3 layer, with a mocha frosting. This one will be all home made.
Hope you are all doing well. In these some what troubling times, try to keep your head up, smile and of course, have some cake!
Best Regards too you all,
Steve, Shiho and the kiddies

Whats up 9-22-08 for the Kenyons? The kids are getting bigger!
Hello Everyone,
Yesterday was the kids Sports Festival, but we had a rain cancellation. There were actually strong thunderstorms, so it is a good thing we didn’t have it. We ended up going to the video store and watched some movies in the morning, then we ate our lunch and relaxed a bit.
In the afternoon it cleared up a bit, and we went to the beach and played in the waves. Joe and Miyabi had a lot of fun, and did not want to get out of the water after more than an hour or so. The swimming school has really helped their swimming confidence, and they put their heads under the water and everything. They were both a little surprised by the difference of taste of the salt water, but that is the usual learning experience. I think this will really help them to keep those mouths closed. lol!!!! That will do the trick. Joe especially was doing great. It is nice to see how he is growing up. He has always been very cautious, but he is really becoming more confident in himself. When we were in the waves, he was telling me to let go of his hand, and that he was okay. “I can do it daddy. I’m okay daddy. Watch me put my face under the water daddy.” He is getting to be a big boy now. We are trying to give him a little more room to make his own way, and he is doing great. What a difference from 5 to 6 years old. We still have to remind him he’s not 16 yet, especially when he requests a cell phone for his birthday, or asks when he can have his own room or start driving…. Actually, since he has turned 6, he has started to take a shower by himself now and then. Boy he is getting big.
Now that I think about it, Miyabi has started into that 4 year old testing stage. She wants to fight most everything, and wants to have everything her way. She is so cute when she starts screaming about how nobody loves her… funny for 10 seconds, then not to funny, as she is sent to the corner. Joe used to go to that corner a lot, but it is becoming more and more a Miyabi thing. I am sure that next year Miyabi will turn it over to Hanano, since she is getting into hitting her big brother and sister now. Life is sooooooo exciting in our house these days.
The alternate day for the Sports Festival is tomorrow, Tuesday the 23rd. The kids are looking forward to it, and the weather should be nice and sunny. We will take some pictures and try to post them after we get home in the afternoon.
Hope you are well, and talk to you soon,

Growing up and a new Bicycle for Steve
Well the kids are growing, and as many of you also know at this point, our family is growing, too. We are expecting our 4th child, and we just found out this one is a BOY. So we are going to be b;g;g;b, all about 2 years apart. Well it is time to get busy again.
Well here we are. We have had 2 birthdays in as many weeks. Hanano is 2 and Joe is now 6. Hard to believe it. They are all getting so big. Next week is the Sports Festival for the kids school, which is a huge deal. Not just for the kids, but for the teachers and parents too. For example, Miyabi's teacher called us at 9PM the other night to talk about something, and she all the other teachers were still at school. This was a Friday night too. Before the sports festival, this is pretty common. And for the parents, they have to bring a box lunch for the family to eat in front of all the other families. This lunch will be looked at and un-officially judged by all that attend. This lunch will take 2-4 hours to make. I really am serious about this. Shiho helped a friend do their bento last year, and they woke up at 5AM, and spent 3 hours on it. It has to taste good, but more importantly must LOOK GOOD. Anyways, will take some pics and will post after we have the event on the 21st.
I got a contract job for 2 weeks to start, subing for a guy that quit a Jr. High position. I am looking forward to it really. It will be interesting to see how the relationship is with the kids and teachers. Each school really has a different feel with all the various dynamics.
To this end, I ended up buying a used bicycle for commuting back and forth to work. It is about 9km each way, so it will be a nice little workout. I think it should take about 25-30 minutes or so. On the way home, maybe I can change my route somedays to make it a little further. Maybe go into the mountains a little to really get a workout on some hills.
The bike is a Bridgestone belt driven bike. It has 3 speeds, with a rear rack and a nic
Shiho...
From the recycling shop, Steve rode the new used bicycle and I took the kids home. We thought we would be home before him even with stopping at a store to get some food, but we were all wrong! Steve IS still very fast! When he called me from our house, we were still at the store! Here is the cute thing that Joe said - "How come Daddy got home first?! His bicycle has only two tires and our car has four!!! Why, Mama?"
All the kids, of course, looked at Daddy with respect and amazement when we got home ;)
Hope you are all fine and talk to you soon,

August 2008
Well, I am back from my trip to Thailand. It was a great time, but I am glad to be back. Very tiring trip, and I think we have some good ideas for a tour business in Chaing Mai. That will be a bit of work, putting the business plan together. Although, I am sure I will enjoy it.
Well we started in Bangkok for a few days, then flew to Chaing Mai. There we drove up North for a few days in the back country. After driving around and talking to locals, we have some great Motorcycle routes to use in the future. Then we took the train back to Bangkok, which left us a little tired out.
Few more days in Bangkok, then went to the beach in the South. Very beautiful and relaxing time, but a bit stormy. Went on the water one time, but it was really not very clear. The day we left though, it was much nicer and the water was clear. Then back to Bangkok and on a plane home. This was eventful, but I will not bother with the details. I will just say I made a mistake with my schedule.
Shiho and the kids were in Shimane, and had fun going to the pre-school there. They actually found a snake in the yard one day, and got a couple of pics.

Goodbye and a little catch-up
Today was my last day as an ALT. It was fun, and all so hard to say goodbye to the kids. Most of the kids are really great, and I will miss them. Since this is now summer vacation, and the kids are at school to play in their sport clubs, that is what I was doing with them. First I watched some volleyball, then went and played ping-pong for 1.5 hours in a really hot judo hall. Next back to the gym to play volleyball a little. Then visited the art room and the soccer club for a few minutes. Then I grabbed the keys to the pool and went for a dip, and I was a little suprised when a few minutes later a couple of other teachers came and one of them jumped in too. More is better I guess. Next it is off to the baseball field, where I did some batting practice with the kids. I think we were all suprised by how well I hit, and then how I missed like 10 in a row... well it was really hot out there... yeah, that's why. (*8
I would be depressed and laying on the couch for weeks, but instead I am going to Thailand to see my friend Tommy. We are going to look into some business ideas we have, and maybe we can find some time to trek in the North and go diving in the South. Will have pics in a few weeks.
Shiho: Looking forward to have my trip someday. :)
Steve: I am lucky to have Shiho for my wife. She is not feeling really well these days, but she still wants me to have a fun time.
Here is the catch-up...
We took the Shinkansen to Osaka and spent a long weekend with Shiho's uncle and cousin. Kids had a lot of fun with their second cousins, too. We went to Kyoto to see some temples and to the Osaka Aquarium and saw a lot of fish type creatures.
Here are the latest pics from Osaka and a few others.

Problems learning English
Today is Friday, and I just finished my last class of the day. I am at my better school, but just taught the worst class here. The kids don’t listen and don’t really even try. I wish I could talk to them more in Japanese and tell them a little about my experience as a kid. They have so much potential, but just don’t really even try. This is how I was as a kid, so I wish I could tell them what they are in store for. The real problem is that they won’t be able to go back to school later to make up what they miss now. In Japan, you can pretty much do it when you are suppose to, or you are not going to get into the right high school, and that leads to a bad college or no college at all. Next week I am at my more challenging school, but it is going to be fun.
Why does the Japanese school system fail to teach kids English? They should be able to speak English pretty well by the time they get done with high school. They have had 3 hours per week, times about 45 weeks per year of school, times 6 years (3 in junior high and 3 in high school). This should equate to about 810 hours of English instruction on a regular basis give or take. I think in the United States kids would have a pretty good handle of Japanese after half this many hours of Japanese, or any other language for that matter.
Okay, being a self-proclamed expert in the field of the Japanese school system after my nearly 3 months teaching here (okay, maybe I am drawing at straws…), I will tell you the 2 reasons that after 800+/- hours 18 year olds can’t speak English.
#1. There are few places in Japan that one can actually utilize or even hear or speak English. Without having in place more English in the country, or at least something that kids can see that they can do with it, there is little reason to actually be able to speak or understand English. They know the rules of the English language better than the average graduating university student in the U.S., this is because they are heavily tested on this while in school. And yet a skill that is not nurtured and used over time, is bound to be forgot and degraded.
Even when I speak to the English teachers at school using English ( generally my Japanese is too poor for serious communication) they then talk to the other teachers about how hard and bad it was having to speak English. I mean it is a real conversation about how what a horrible thing it was to have to speak the language they all learned to at least 6 years, plus the courses they must have taken in college (they all went to college, and are mostly very intelligent). There is really a stigma to having to speak English in Japan. Although it is also a fascination and dream for many Japanese, many teachers in my JHS feel it is not at all enjoyable. And these are the ones whom have some capability in actually speaking.
#2. Japanese is the main language used in the English classes. They say the target sentence in English, everything is explained in Japanese. This is the rule for most English classes that I have witnessed or know about. There are exceptions that I have heard about, and from what I hear, within a few months the kids are able to speak and have conversations easily.
From my perspective, the kids never get out of their comfort zone of Japanese, to explore and create a new comfort zone in English. For example, when I am on my way to school, I talk to some kids from my classes while we are walking together. Even though we had just covered something in class extensively, they just don’t feel comfortable trying to use it that is without having Japanese as a crutch. When I use Japanese too, more of them want to talk a little bit, but then mainly in Japanese, not English.
I can tell you from my experience learning Japanese, the only way I really am able to learn much, is when I am away from English speakers (aka: the family). I have now created my own comfort zone in Japanese, although it is QUITE SMALL! (>,<)!!!
OH YEAH…. the family... that’s right, that is what I am suppose to talk about!
Hanano is no longer using her pacifier and favorite shirt. Did I mention this already??? If so, I talk about it again, since she does not want to sleep now without crawling around the futons and screaming for an hour or so. We do enjoy the activity, but being able to rest is good too. Oh yeah, she likes to wake up earlier now too. Sometimes awaking at 5AM, although she has been sleeping into about 6-6:30 the last couple of mornings. When she gets up, she is like JOE, MIYABI… and then jumps on them and us… well we are all up at that point.
Oh yeah, she is doing great as always, and also is growing like crazy.
It is rainy season now, but without the rain. Well it is raining a little (some days it rains all day), but the weather is sunny and warm today, with just a touch of humidity. お天気いいね The weather is nice.
Joe and Miyabi are doing great, 譲とみやび元気です and are enjoying school. They still have not started swim school, but I think we will try to get them to go soon. It is getting warm, so swimming will be a nice break for them.
As some of you may know, Joe got some frogs when we were at our friend’s farm. The big one, Barbie, died of unknown causes early last week. I suspected that he/she ate too much, or ate a poisonous bug that we feed to him/her. Then yesterday Milton and Froggie-Man also died of unknown causes within a day or so. Barbie was buried in the back yard, and then Milton and Froggie-man followed in a joint plot early this morning. The conversation that I had with Joe and Miyabi about how “we all die and go to be with GOD”, when we buried Barbie was very interesting. They wanted to know if I was going to die, then they wanted to know if they were going to die… 4 and 5… but it was a good time. I reassured them that it was going to be a long, long… very long time until any of us die. There was less interest with the services for Milton and Froggie-man. Life is ever interesting, is it not?
Joe is about to loose his 2 front bottom teeth. They have been a wiggling for a few weeks, and are bound to come out soon. The tooth fairy is saving his yen for this.
Miyabi’s front upper tooth is turning a bit dark, after taking a fall, mainly on her mouth, a few months back. Though she seems to be no worse for the event…
Oh yeah, the dentist came to their school last week, and they have no cavities. I guess our brushing routine is okay after all. That is it for the tooth report. I feel like a daddy with all this talk about my kiddies’ baby teeth.
Hope you are doing fine, and talk to you soon.

6-20-08, whats going on...
It is rainning everyday now. Rainy season is here, but the humidity is not too bad yet, or am I getting used to it? I think it is not bad yet.
I guess the big news would be that Hanano has decided that she does not want her pacifier and favorite shirt. She now just screams and crys when we are trying to get her to sleep. Fun, fun, fun. Well this is the beginning of her terible 2's probably. "Do you like that ice cream Hanano? NO!" So goes life.
Hope you are all fine. There are the rest of the pics up on the web now.
They are here... http://picasaweb.google.com/stephenkenyon/Japan7

Hello Everyone... were back!
Well we are back here, for now at least (I will try harder). I apologize for the long break since I have posted. It has been very busy here for the Kenyon household. We are all doing well, but things are moving very fast now. It has been more than one year since we got here now actually.
So what has been going on for us you ask…. well let’s see…
I started a 4 month contract working at 2 Japanese Junior High Schools. One is really good, and one is not. At the later school, an 8th grader is now in jail for beating up a teacher, and the classes are often out of control. At the other school, the kids are very well behaved and classes go pretty smoothly most of the time.
Joe and Miyabi have started going to school. They are doing well, and seem to like it. The school has a bus that picks them up at 9AM and drops them off at 3 or 3:30 in the afternoon. They should be starting swim school in the next few weeks, once we decide on the right school.
Shiho and Hanano are home together and having fun taking care of the house. They are pretty busy going to the parks in the neighborhood as well. Once a week, they go to Joe and Miyabi’s school for a play group for younger kids. Shiho is also looking into some business ideas we can start in Japan. Shiho is working for company part time teaching English. Her last job was teaching English to a boy that was going to New Zealand for a month, and helping a girl with her speech contest.
Rainy season is going to start here soon, so we are getting ready for that. It was humid and rained all day yesterday, but today it is nice and sunny. Once rainy season starts, it will be very hot and humid, and raining everyday until summer. Then it will just be hot and humid… well then fall will come and things will be great until winter.
Here are some pics, too. Enjoy!

First Post of 2008
Happy New Years to you all! Well This seems to be my first post for 2008, and at least I got to it before the end of January, and with a few days to spare I would like to point out. (*8
Well we spent most of December in CA and AZ, and it was great seeing everyone. (If we did not see you, we wanted to.;) It actually was very busy and we had a lot to fit in with the travel, holidays and getting used to the time difference.
The first weekend in CA I actually got my CA motorcycle license and International license taken care of. Now I just need to take the Japanese M/C test a few dozen more times to get a passing result. Well I can drive on my IDL until May anyways.
The trip back was pretty easy. The kids got a portable DVD player for Christmas, and they watched it most of the way, but the battery went dead a few hours before we landed, so we had just conversation for the second flight.
The first flight was actually 1 hour late, so we would have missed the flight to Fukuoka, but that flight was and hour late as well. We had good luck there. When we got home and had the kids ready for bed, they had been up for more than 24 hours. They both got a 1-2 hour nap on the plane, but we are really proud of how wonderful they did. (Okay, now I sound like a parent I guess.)
Posted new pics a while back, so check them out at the following if you did not see them already.
